CatRec – Screen Recorder · Last updated: October 25, 2026

This page lists every Android permission CatRec uses, what it is for, and whether you can say no. None of them is used to send your recordings, screenshots or audio to us. How data is handled is covered in the Privacy Policy.

Screen capture

Recording the screen doesn't need a permission listed in the app; instead, Android asks you every time a recording or screenshot starts, and shows that capture is active until it stops. On Android 14 and later you can choose to share a single app instead of the whole screen.

Internal audio (the sound of your games and apps) uses Android's audio playback capture, which works through that same screen-capture approval on Android 10 and later. Some apps don't allow their audio to be captured, and CatRec can't override that.

Permissions Android asks you about

PermissionWhat CatRec uses it forIf you say no
Microphone
RECORD_AUDIO
Recording your voice when you turn on microphone audio or a separate mic track. You can still record video and internal audio.
Camera
CAMERA
The face-cam bubble shown on screen and in your recording, only while you have it turned on.No face cam; everything else works.
Notifications
POST_NOTIFICATIONS (Android 13+)
The recording notification with stop, pause, mute and screenshot buttons, and "recording saved" notices.Recording still works, but you lose the notification controls.
Photos and videos, Music and audio
READ_MEDIA_VIDEO, READ_MEDIA_IMAGES, READ_MEDIA_VISUAL_USER_SELECTED, READ_MEDIA_AUDIO (Android 13+); READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE (Android 12 and lower)
Showing the recordings, screenshots and separate mic tracks CatRec saved in its Recordings and Screenshots lists, including after a reinstall. The App doesn't browse the rest of your gallery or music. "Select photos and videos" (limited access) is supported.New recordings are still saved, but older ones may not show up in the App's lists.
Nearby devices
BLUETOOTH_CONNECT (Android 12+); BLUETOOTH (Android 11 and lower)
Asked once during first-run setup for Bluetooth access that some devices and libraries need around recording. CatRec doesn't scan for, pair with or connect to Bluetooth devices, and doesn't record from Bluetooth microphones.Nothing changes in CatRec.

Permissions you turn on in Android settings

PermissionWhat CatRec uses it forIf you say no
Display over other apps
SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW
The floating record button, the countdown, on-screen drawing, the face-cam bubble, the watermark, and the Capture / Done buttons of a scrolling screenshot on top of other apps.Start and stop recordings from the App or its notification instead.
Battery optimization exemption
REQUEST_IGNORE_BATTERY_OPTIMIZATIONS
An optional prompt to stop aggressive battery savers on some phones from ending long recordings. Some phones may stop long recordings in the background.
Do Not Disturb access
ACCESS_NOTIFICATION_POLICY (optional, Pro)
Only if you turn on Hide notification pop-ups: CatRec switches Do Not Disturb to alarms only while a recording runs, so pop-ups don't appear in the video, then puts your previous setting back (also after a crash). It doesn't read your notifications.Notification pop-ups can appear in recordings, as before.
CatRec game mic helper
Accessibility service (optional)
Keeps your microphone recording while a game or chat app also uses it, so teammates can still hear you. See below.Ordinary recording is unaffected; only game/chat mic recording may not work on some devices.

About the game mic helper

CatRec is not an accessibility tool, and the helper isn't needed to record. You can open its explanation from the Game mic button (the headset icon next to the capture-mode controls), or from Fix game chat mic in Settings. Only after you tap Agree and continue does CatRec open Android's Accessibility settings, where you switch on CatRec game mic helper yourself. Choosing No thanks or leaving the screen is not treated as agreement. Turn it off any time in Settings → Accessibility (the exact path varies by phone).

FOREGROUND_SERVICE_CAMERAKeeping the face-cam bubble running over other apps while you record.
INTERNETAds, Google Play purchases, crash reports and statistics (when turned on), and live streaming to the service you choose (plus reading your Twitch chat if you turn that on). Never used to upload your saved recordings.
ACCESS_NETWORK_STATELive streaming: "Check my connection" reads whether you're on Wi-Fi or mobile data and Android's estimate of your upload speed, to suggest a stream quality.
com.android.vending.BILLINGBuying CatRec Pro (subscription or lifetime) through Google Play, and restoring earlier purchases such as Remove Ads.
WAKE_LOCKKeeping the screen on during a recording when you turn on Keep screen on.
WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE (Android 9 and lower)Saving recordings on older Android versions. Android 10 and later save through the system media store without it.

Choosing files

When you pick an image or video yourself (a watermark image, clips to merge, a video to turn into a GIF, or an attachment for an email to us), CatRec uses Android's photo picker, so it only sees the items you choose. If you pick a different folder to save recordings in, Android's folder picker gives CatRec access to that folder only.
